Building a Massage Therapy Practice from Scratch: Part 4

back82.jpg[Charlyne Carrier is a new independent massage therapist practicing in Montreal, Quebec. We found her on our Facebook Page when she said she was going to write her business plan using our Business Plan Toolkit as a guide. We asked her if she would share her insights in the process and she graciously agreed! So over the next months, Charlyne will be sharing her story of building her business in this series. Please chime in and tell your stories, tips, and tidbits in the comments section.]

Ah well, April wasn’t too good to me financially. A long winter that seems to go on forever. People were desperate for warmer weather. It was a slow month compared to the beginning of the year. I didn’t do as much as I had planned. Was April a slow month for some of you too?

The Massage Therapist’s Guide to All Things Google – from Massamio

I have to say this massage community, all of you, have helped me in so many ways since I started following Massamio! It’s incredible! Thank you sooo much!

I came across this guide and decided to take a look at it. Next thing you know, I’m creating my own domain name and my business email address. It is so easy to use and also very affordable for a newbie like me! It will help my practice I’m sure.

Not one… not two… but three big decisions!

I celebrated my birthday on April 20th with my aunt, on a terrace bathed by the sun. We were discussing her coming back to work after chemotherapy and some of the projects I have for the future of my practice.

As I got back home that night, I suddenly realized how convinced I am of my future even though I don’t have appointments booked daily yet. I’m confident everything will be alright.

So, as I got to work (my part time day job in an office) the following morning, I requested a meeting with my boss and gave him my resignation. I will leave on July 30th to work only as a massage therapist. OH BOY! This was not in my plan I can tell you that! But, I knew this is what I had to do.

The day after, I went to confirm my registration to a new part-time training (one day a week) starting in September. I will become a masso-kinesitherapist. I thought about this training a lot and since the next group will only start next year, I decided to start now. It will take a little more than two years on a part-time schedule to complete this so it’s better for me to start sooner. Doing this training will make me a better therapist and also help me develop my clientele.

Why stop at two big decisions when you can make a third one? I was given a rare opportunity at the clinic. I’m going to rent a bigger room as of August and I will be alone. No more moving my things around from one available room to the other! And no more carrying everything back home every night. Plus, I will be able to decorate the place like I want. How cool is this?

None of this was in my Business Plan for 2014, but I believe that things always happen for a reason and this was all meant to be. I’m so excited about all this.

We at Massamio are excited about your progress and growth as well, Charlyne! It’s thrilling to see a new massage therapist using some of the resources that we’ve put out there for the massage therapy community, and to see all of the opportunity you are seizing! Congrats on making the commitment to your business full-time and best of luck! We look forward to hearing from you again next month!
